Next week in Wellington: In theory I’ll be in Wellington next week from the Tuesday to the Sunday morning – and should be back home sometime the Sunday afternoon… In theory because the weather’s horrible in the lower North Island and in the South Island at the moment, so I am worried about the flights in and out of Wellington next week 🙁 Though I had heard that the bad weather is moving up the North Island, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to fly out of Auckland and into Wellington without any problems on the Tuesday, and then the other way round on the Sunday again.
I’ve already said that I’m going on this trip because of the WW1 stuff at the Auckland Museum making me want to see the Sir Peter Jackson Anzac displays in Wellington, which admittedly I think will be a lot better than the Auckland ones. Also my friend – the one who has just bought a new house in Wellington – is having her house warming next Saturday evening and I want to be in Wellington for that too.
I’ve also arranged with her to meet up for lunch and/or dinner at least once in the days I will be Wellington, I also have a couple of other old friends I want to meet up with and one of my mother’s cousins lives in Wellington, so I will need to arrange to see her too. It’s going to be interesting to see how Wellington has changed since the last time I was there!
Apparently Jake is on one of his random restaurant things again and is starting to get groups to go to a variety of places to try out the food! We’re going to a crab place in the central city tonight, which hopefully will be good. I don’t actually mind ea food, though he was quite clear that the restaurant was a crab place and not a general sea food restaurant, which would make it more interesting! (Part of the point of going in a group is so everyone can try a wide variety of the food they make).
I had to stop and think about it, but the last time I can clearly remember having real proper crab was over twenty years ago at a Vietnamese restaurant here in Auckland. I do remember liking it, but it being incredibly fiddly to eat. It’s going to be interesting at least and it’s actually fun to do this sort of thing on a semi regular basis. I usually end up going to the same set of restaurants when I go out to eat with family, as my father can be incredibly picky about the food he eats.
I have been thinking seriously about taking a long weekend and going down to Wellington to go see their World War 1 exhibit – the one with the work done by Sir Peter Jackson and Weta in particular, which happens to be in the old Wellington Museum and not Te Papa itself… Going to Wellington isn’t a big deal, especially given that I don’t have any kids myself, and I haven’t been down there in a couple of years now!
It doesn’t help that the Auckland Museum exhibits for World War 1 aren’t nearly as interesting as the ones in Wellington appear to be. The special exhibit for Anzac Day was that mincraft one that I’m no where near as interested in as the Weta exhibit’s in Wellington.
I must admit that I’m incredibly pleased that I didn’t go this week given the horrible weather – and the bad flooding! – that Wellington has been having recently! That is one of the problems about going to Wellington in winter, but over the last few days the weather has been worse than usual for that area!
I also want to start getting out and doing more “bigger” things, which would include a few days away out of Auckland. I mean if my SiL can randomly decide to go on shopping holidays to Australia with her friends I can start doing more travel too. I don’t think it’s helped that my brother has been talking about the kite boarding holidays he’s planning for later on this year with his friends. The had been planning on going to South America in August or September and are now planning on going to somewhere in Australia instead – possibly. Or was going kite boarding in Australia as well as South America?
Anyway I’d really like to go to Wellington and Te Papa again sooner rather than later. The Weta World War 1 exhibit in the old museum is just a good reason to get down there again.
I have everything sorted out for new year’s eve tomorrow now. I will be going to a party at a friend’s place, rather than going out to the city or anything like that. Unfortunately, if the weather is bad – it’s supposed to raining tomorrow evening – it won’t be much point making the effort to see the annual fireworks this year 🙁 Given that the only year the fireworks were particularly good was the one were Kim Dotcom paid to have a larger than usual fireworks display put on. (It was the one were they arranged to have those 2 barges out in the harbor and had fireworks go off from those rather than just from the Sky Tower).
It would be different if there was a big fireworks display and I am sad that I’ll miss it this year, but realistically speaking the fireworks display will be exactly the same as most of the previous years. Meaning I won’t be missing anything I haven’t already seen before! I have decided to catch a taxi to and from my friends place rather than trying to drive myself for a couple of reasons. I’m particularly familiar with the drive to his place and would rather not try it at night time, it also means that I can drink what ever I want to and not have to worry about driving home again! 🙂
As I feel as if I’m all over the place at the moment, I thought I would try planning the coming month more than I had been. If any of my rl friends reading this see anything I’m planning on going to tell me somehow and we could arrange to go together! 🙂
Want to go see November or December:
Franklin Road lights
Checking the Christmas Decorations in the city – and if anyone knows of any other Christmas related decorations/shows/events tell me! 🙂 (The central city Santa Parade is on the 30th of November)
Want to go see November:
The Devonport Arts Festival
The Sculpture on the Shore in Devonport (Gerry?)
The Short Film Festival
The Taste of Auckland Festival – I would definitely like some people to go with to this one so I will properly arrange something for it
Art in the Dark (Gerry again?)
This is on top of the usual going out, eating out and stuff like that of course 🙂 Have I missed anything? Or any suggestions?
