Next week in Wellington: In theory I’ll be in Wellington next week from the Tuesday to the Sunday morning – and should be back home sometime the Sunday afternoon… In theory because the weather’s horrible in the lower North Island and in the South Island at the moment, so I am worried about the flights in and out of Wellington next week 🙁 Though I had heard that the bad weather is moving up the North Island, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to fly out of Auckland and into Wellington without any problems on the Tuesday, and then the other way round on the Sunday again.
I’ve already said that I’m going on this trip because of the WW1 stuff at the Auckland Museum making me want to see the Sir Peter Jackson Anzac displays in Wellington, which admittedly I think will be a lot better than the Auckland ones. Also my friend – the one who has just bought a new house in Wellington – is having her house warming next Saturday evening and I want to be in Wellington for that too.
I’ve also arranged with her to meet up for lunch and/or dinner at least once in the days I will be Wellington, I also have a couple of other old friends I want to meet up with and one of my mother’s cousins lives in Wellington, so I will need to arrange to see her too. It’s going to be interesting to see how Wellington has changed since the last time I was there!
Unfortunately it does look rather shaky for Voat now 🙁 The official announcement on Voat about having their servers closed down but still being up due to having the information transferred to the cloud just in time. The drama thread on Reddit. I guess it’s becoming increasing likely that the people from fat people hate are going to be the cause of Voat being taken down/failing in some way, which is annoying for the rest of us!
In a way it’s a great pity that they’ve been throwing so much money at the guy who started Voat – he said he’s gotten $(US)8,000 just from people from FPH, as it does look like that they’re going to be responsible for the site’s destitution.
The whole drama involving Fat People Hate being being banned from Reddit and heading over to Voat, (among other places), is actually highly amusing. Especially given how much money the people from FPH seem to throwing at Voat in order to get more servers up and running with all of the extra people flooding Voat all of a sudden! (Voat has been posting requests for Bitcoin donations and money via Paypal on their site). I’m just waiting for the point in time that Fat People Hate and Voat fall to pieces – assuming Voat is allowed to exist for that long, as there do seem to be rumors going around that they are being sued by the people/companies who own Reddit.
Though I would find it a lot more amusing if the people from Fat People Hate manage to drive enough money and traffic to Voat to make the site, only to have it become so poplar that they start creating the same problems for themselves again at Voat! (I’m really surprised someone hasn’t decided to take matters into their own hands and start their own completely separate FPH website, I’m not counting fatpeoplehate.com as they were – and still are for some bizarre reason – using the previous fatpeoplehate sub-reddit rather than creating their own 100% independant site).
Now that I think I really, really don’t understand why somebody doesn’t get off their butts and actually do the work needed to create their own FPH only type website? If someone can manage to create the new site to replace imgur for them why not a whole site like Voat to go along with it, that’s solely FPH directed?? The rate things are going for them, Fat People Hate and Voat is going to become:-
Fat People Hate and Voat – you were supposed to be the chosen one.
One way or the other, either they are the cause of Voat going down or it’s success and finding themselves having similar problems on Voat as they are having and had on Reddit. (I guess it is very possible they case off most to all of the non-FPH users from Voat and Voat solely becomes a Fat People Hate echo chamber as a middle ground).
I’ve just realized how little TV of any sort I’ve been watching over the last few weeks. There really hasn’t been much I’ve wanted to see recently and days like yesterday when the weather has actually been really nice has made staying at home watching TV a waste of time. I feel as if I need to go out and take advantage of the good weather before it gets really bad and wintery, making it unpleasant doing stuff outside. I have started watching Orange is the New Black season 3 though and I am rather enjoying it.
It helps that it’s on Netflix so I can watch it whenever I want to, as I’ve stopped watching TV when it’s actually being showed on TV. (Well, expect for the news but even then I only tend to watch the first 15-25 minutes at most when I haven’t gone out). I have been struggling through Daredevil, I like it enough to not give up on it, but I’m definitely not enjoying it nearly as much as other people seem to be. I am also working my way through the second season of Homeland, which is really good.
I think the last time I actually binged watched anything was when season 4 of Wilfred came out on Netflix. A large part of that was being desperate to see the last episode and being sick enough that I couldn’t go out at all. I still think I need to get out and do more things – certainly see more shows and things like that while it’s still relatively nice out.
Apparently Jake is on one of his random restaurant things again and is starting to get groups to go to a variety of places to try out the food! We’re going to a crab place in the central city tonight, which hopefully will be good. I don’t actually mind ea food, though he was quite clear that the restaurant was a crab place and not a general sea food restaurant, which would make it more interesting! (Part of the point of going in a group is so everyone can try a wide variety of the food they make).
I had to stop and think about it, but the last time I can clearly remember having real proper crab was over twenty years ago at a Vietnamese restaurant here in Auckland. I do remember liking it, but it being incredibly fiddly to eat. It’s going to be interesting at least and it’s actually fun to do this sort of thing on a semi regular basis. I usually end up going to the same set of restaurants when I go out to eat with family, as my father can be incredibly picky about the food he eats.
With all of the drama going on Reddit over the last 36ish hours now I can’t help thinking that this is either going to make or break Voat – which is essentially a Reddit clone site made about a year ago. FPH had already been moved over there as well. Unfortunately all of the people from the now banned FPH sub Reddit are giving the Voat servers the old Reddit hug of death. IF the people running Voat can get that under control fast I do think that this going to end up making the site, believe it or not.
I can’t help wondering how much the extra servers are going to end up costing the people who do run Voat – if I remember correctly the guy who started it was and properly still is an American college student, who I assume is going to be rather on the broke side. Though if he can pull all of the FPH drama and Voat off to his advantage this could easily make him very well off financially, if not out right wealthy if he can find a company to buy it like the founders of Reddit did originally!
Though I am pleased I’m not having to deal to with all of that, I do think it would be oddly stressful and wonderful all at the same time. People are already describing Voat as a replacement for Reddit in the same way that Reddit was a replacement for Digg and with the sudden influx of new users due to Reddit banning FPH it could give Voat the kick in the arse it needed to actually make it successful, as previously people there had been complaining about the low number of new links being submitted there. (Voat was painfully quiet compared to Reddit so they did have a point).
Not much is happening here in Auckland this month, making me at a bit of a loose end. I’m hoping that I’m through the worst of the illnesses going around at the moment – including the virus which laid out me last week. I do think I’ll go down to Wellington next month – both to go to Te Papa and because one of my friends has just bought a new house in Wellington, which admittedly I’d really like to sticky beak and go and check it out 🙂 Though, I’m planning on asking her when she’s having her house warming party and planning the trip around her party, but as she’s only just bought her new house in the last couple of weeks she’s going to need time to settle in.
The only really big thing happen here at the moment is my brother and SiL are having their house completely (and I do mean completely) redone. They’re having the roof replaced, which is a serious undertaking as they have an old (1920s/1930s?) house which has asbestos in it, which of course means it has to be removed and replaced with safer modern insulation. They’re also having the kitchen completely redone, with walls being taken out the kitchen itself made larger, a new breakfast area, and they’re also having a covered deck area built at the same time – I think the deck is the one of the reasons the roof is being redone?
Anyway, their house is being worked on for over 12 weeks. They’re certainly out of the house in a rental for 12 weeks as the bulk of the work is done. They did have the roof of their garage replaced while they were still in the house – the garage is a lot newer and wasn’t insulated with asbestos so they didn’t have to move for that part. They also had gas lines put into the house last month – for that gas water heater that’s supposed to provide limitless amounts of hot water….
